Playing it, step by step

Cube Miner begins with a simple situation: you are stuck in a prison, and the only way out leads through the mines. The world is made of blocks, and you move through it by digging through layers of soil. Poki describes the game as an underground platformer-puzzle.

Digging brings in resources, and resources feed everything else. You can trade with merchants, upgrade your gear, and use dynamite where digging alone is too slow. Poki also mentions eating cakes to climb, pumping the mine generator, and finding secret exits and locked doors, so the mine is more than a straight shaft down.

On a computer, click to dig and use WASD or the arrow keys to move. On a touch screen a joystick handles movement. Because the controls are split between moving and digging, it takes a few minutes before the two feel natural together.

Hints that help

  • Collect resources as you go. They are what you trade and upgrade with, so skipping them slows you down later.
  • Visit merchants when you have something to trade, and upgrade gear before you dig much deeper.
  • Keep dynamite for places where digging by hand is slow. It is a tool for specific obstacles, not a replacement for your pickaxe.
  • Look for secret exits and locked doors as you dig. The way out is not always a straight line down.
  • Move and dig in short steps. Watching what is around you before each dig helps you avoid dead ends.

A good match if

Players who like exploring and upgrading in small steps, fans of blocky digging games, and anyone who wants a goal (get out of the prison) in a game that is otherwise open.

Honest minuses

  • Poki shows ads around its games, which can interrupt a long dig.
  • The prison theme and dynamite are cartoon-style, but the setting is not the gentle one of the cozy games on this shelf.
  • Several systems (digging, trading, upgrades, dynamite) arrive together, so the first few minutes can feel busy.
